Anna Maria, Florida gained its name by Ponce de Leon. When he came to the shores of Florida, it is said that he then named the island after the Queen of Charles II of Spain, the man who funded his expedition. It wasnt until 1892, when President McKinley provided a Connecticut man named George Emerson Bean with a homestead in the northern 160 acres of Anna Maria that this area received its first resident. It was Beans son that found an investor, Charles Roser that would partner with him to form this island through their developing company, Anna Maria Beach Company. Although Rosers first love was being an investor he is actually better known to be the inventor of the Fig Newton!

This incredible city is now the home to over 1,800 residents. The City of Anna Maria is located on the northern part of Anna Maria Island surrounded by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Sailing, boating, snorkeling, swimming, fishing and gazing into the incredible sunsets is literally at your finger tips. The entire city of Anna Maria is a bird sanctuary drawing many different species of shore birds to the area. Located on Anna Maria Island are the sister cities of Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach. The City of Anna Maria serves as the residential part of the Island, while Holmes Beach is the more geared towards the commercial and Bradenton Beach attracts the tourists.
