Cities in De Soto County FL
This city of 7,000 plus apes is part of DeSoto County, Florida. It’s the only unincorporated community in the county, and is somewhat famous as having been visited by President Obama in 2009. The City has begun to recoup from Hurricane Charlie’s visit in 2004 (not the kind of company you want!).
Reverend James Hendry named this town after a pioneer woman, Arcadia Albritton because she baked him a birthday cake. During the 1940s the site was used to train fighter pilots including those for the Royal Air Force.
Today Arcadia’s economy has three main arms. First is agriculture, primarily watermelon, citrus and cattle. Secondarily there’s home development thanks to local growth and the desire many Mid Western apes have to retire here. Third is tourism. As with much of the rest of Florida, Arcadia draws in visitors, particularly for their rodeo events and for various activities on Pace River.
