Cities in Polk County FL
Auburndale, Florida was named in honor of a poem written by Oliver Goldsmith, entitled The Deserted Village. As the story goes, Goldsmiths native village, Lishoy, was disguised under the name of Auburn to protect it from the feudalistic wealth that ultimately destroyed his village. There are many towns that have been named after his village; there are Auburns in 10 different states and two Auburndales, one in Massachusetts and the beautiful Auburndale, Florida. Originally named Sanatoria, the first settler on the beautiful Lake Ariana was John Ledue in 1873. The town was established and the name was changed in 1884 when the civil engineer of the downtown area, Mjr. Louis McClain was describing this charming settlement to his friend, Ralph Pulsifer, the editor of the Boston Herald. It was Mrs. Ralph Pulsifer that stated that by the description of the area, it reminded her of her hometown in Massachusetts, and so it was named, Auburndale, Florida. The settlement began to flourish with the economy relying mostly on the agriculture in the area. It was in the late 1913s that the downtown area was completely destroyed by a fire. Upon the repairing of the structures, two years later a second fire struck the area. It was not until the 1920s the town began to take shape again with Spanish Style structures and a picturesque downtown. This is the year that Auburndale became incorporated, this is the year that Auburndale, Florida moved forward. Today, Auburndale, Florida is the home to well over 11,000 residents.
