Hernando DeSota stumbled upon Bradenton, Florida in 1539, when he and his companions landed at Shaws Point during his quest for riches. In 1842 travelers arrived in Manatee County from South Carolina, Josiah Gates and two brothers, Hector and Joseph Braden. The Bradens became major landowners in the area and both the city of Bradenton and Braden River were named in their honor. Dr. Joseph Braden settled in the Bradenton area and became a primary landowner in the area and constructed a sugar mill. It is said that both Bradens home and his sugar mill served as a safe house against Native American attacks during the Seminole Wars. Bradenton, Florida is formed by a melding of both the town of Manatee, incorporated in 1888, and the town of Bradentown, an incorporated city in 1903. From the melding the two towns, Bradenton, Florida emerged and was incorporated that same year and made into the county seat of Manatee County. Today Bradenton is the home to over 600,000 residents. Located along the southern tip of Tampa Bay and the southern shores of the Manatee River in Manatee County, Bradenton provides an abundance of outdoor recreational activities. Indian Spring Park was named in honor of the Native American Indians that drank from this fresh spring so many years ago. Josiah Gates lived near the springs in a 20-room home that stood three stories tall. This incredible building was built to provide both room and board to those who came to the area as potential residents, now all that is left is a historical marker paying respect to the site. Every spring Bradenton, Florida celebrates the day Hernando DeSoto came to the area with The Florida Heritage Festival! The festival provides a 1903 general store, Manatee Countys first courthouse and an old-time turpentine still in honor of our ancestors that once roamed this area. Heather Hills Golf Course offers 18 holes on 3,521 yards of prime golfing with a par of 61, and this is only one of the 25 World Class golf courses that surround the area. Spring Training for the Pittsburgh Pirates takes place at the McKechnie Field and have continued this tradition since 1969. Downtown Bradenton offers plenty of opportunities for local artists, providing studios, galleries and Art centers.
