Dundee, Florida was dubbed in 1910 by a gentleman by the name of Mr. Menzie. Menzie was an early settler from Dundee, Scotland and felt that this new settlement should be named in honor of his overseas home. During this time, Menzie also named one of the many lakes in his honor, Lake Menzie. In 1911, the construction of the Atlantic Coast Railroad brought with it many new settlers to the area. By 1912, the Dundee Passenger Depot is what contributed to the early growth of the settlement of Dundee. When William W. Shepard rolled in from Minneapolis, Minnesota and purchased over 14,000 acres of land in partnership with some of his associates from the Highlands Development Co., his purchase included most of what is known as Dundee, Florida today. This company had two main ideas to focus on; developing the citrus industry and building a community. Promoting railroad fare refunds with the purchase of land in the area is what brought these ideas into a reality. This promotion in turn created prosperity for Dundee, Florida. Soon hotels were built to house any prospective land owners that came to the area and Dundee began to grow. The city was incorporated in 1924 and is home to both seasonal and annual residents. Today Dundee, Florida is the home to well over 3,000 residents. Situated in the hills of the Lake Wales Ridge, Dundee, Florida offers the many that call this area home many recreational opportunities. There are many sparkling lakes surrounding this incredible city that provide ample opportunities for fishing, swimming, paddling and boating.
