In the late 1800s a traveling Englishman by the name of John Bingham purchased 160 acres in Central Florida. He built a log cabin on a beautiful lake that he named Eagle Lake, in honor of the Eagle that was living in the pine tree that was close to his new home. Bingham arrived in the area when we was 53 years old and remained until he died at the age of 90 in 1917. During his stay in Eagle Lake, Florida he kept a diary in which he described his surroundings, I can conceive of no natural scenery more beautiful than that environing Eagle Lake. During the time in which Bingham was enjoying his new environment, a widow by the name of Louisa McLeod came to the area from Alabama and purchased 115 acres of land, and by 1887 these acres became the center of the town of Eagle Lake, Florida. The economy grew from the citrus industry, a brickyard, a turpentine mill and according to reports, the tomato industry as well.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau the population of Eagle Lake, Florida was 2,493 in 2004. It was in the 1980s that Eagle Lake took on the slogan Growing with people in mind. Its an ideology that has prevailed since the 1800s and still holds true today. Keeping with the small town charm, and bringing together community, Eagle Lake has strived to make community growth remain aligned with what benefits the people.
