Cities in De Soto County FL
Located ten miles southwest of Arcadia, this is a small unincorporated community in DeSoto County, Florida. As the name implies Fort Ogden is the site of an old fort. In the 1830, settlers came to this region and found the Seminole Indians already here, with little interest in uprooting. This launched the Second Seminole Indian War. Six years later the war still waged on, so to help supply the troops, Camp Ogden was established (named after Captain Ogden from the 8th US Infantry).
A small community developed around the Fort, growing citrus and raising cattle. The post office here, set up in 1876, is the oldest post office in the county and its still in service.
