Cities in Polk County FL

Haines City, Florida once known as Clay Cut, was established in 1883 when the South Florida Railroad came through the settlement. This area was named Clay Cut due to the railroad tracks that were cut deep into the clay that surrounded the area. Rumors have it that the railroad tracks were so deep in some places that at ground level some of the trains could not even be seen. The city was platted out in 1885 and shortly thereafter Colonel Henry Haines, a senior railroad official, built a train depot in the area and the town was renamed in honor of this great man! In 1909 the Haines City Citrus Growers Association was founded by six of the local citrus growers in the area, creating the economy that would fund the city for many years. Still in existence today, the Haines City Citrus Growers Association is one of the oldest and largest citrus co-operatives in the state of Florida. It was in 1915 that Florida Fruit Products Company introduced bottled grapefruit juice to the nation that led to the pioneering of frozen citrus concentrate in the 1940s.
