Cities in Polk County FL
Originally serving as a Military Outpost known as Fort Cummings, the city of Lake Alfred, Florida rose up in 1839. Fort Cummings was constructed to protect our United States Military from the Native American Indians during the Seminole Indian Wars, as did the many other forts that dotted the State of Florida during this time. In 1840, during the end of the 2nd Seminole Indian War, Seminole Indian Chief Wild Cat came to Fort Cummings to agree to his surrender and return to Indian Territory. This agreement, in turn, prompted the closing down of Fort Cummings and returning the area into the remote region in Central Florida that it remained up until the year of 1887. The Railroad came to the vicinity of Fort Cummings and with it brought prosperity in the form of a lumber mill and turpentine still. Most of the settlers during this time were from Armenia and worked as lumberjacks up until 1907 when J.C. Cox relocated to the area with his family and purchased 80 acres of Citrus Groves. This is the year that the city began to prosper from the beginnings of the Citrus Industry. This versatile community has been known by a number of different names, New Armenia, Bartow Junction, Chubb, Wahnetta and was actually incorporated as Fargo in 1913. In 1915 the name changed yet again and became incorporated as Lake Alfred and so it has remained to date! With a population of nearly 4,500 residents, Lake Alfred, Florida leaves many opportunities for community growth. Situated on several lakes, this community provides a public beach with life guards, a water slide, picnic pavilion, playground, boat ramp, volleyball nets, horseshoes, and BBQ grills and is quite frequently the home of boat and Jet Ski races. In 1917 the MacKays relocated to the area from Scotland and built an estate just north of Lake Rochelle. Robert Morely, a botanist from England, designed both the home and gardens and made it welcoming for hosting many events. This estate is still used today for weddings and many other festivities. There are many community celebrations that are held within the city limits making for a true family oriented community.
