Cities in Union County FL
Lake Butler, county seat of Union County, was incorporated into a city in 1893. Named in honor for the first surveyor general of the Florida Territory, Colonel Robert Butler, Lake Butler was originally part of New River County, now known as Bradford County. The civil war added to inadequate transportation put a halt to growth in this area up until 1890 when the railroads came through town, creating a trade for dairy, cattle and food production. Today, Lake Butler remains a small rural community providing ample opportunities for farming and acreage.
