Cities in Polk County FL

Lakeland, Florida was named in honor of the nineteen lakes that inhabit the area. The name was adopted in 1883, only a short year after Abraham Munn, the founder of the town, purchased 80 acres of land within the downtown area. Munn relocated to the area in 1881 from Louisville, Kentucky where he lived as a wealthy manufacturer in the city. During the year of 1884, the South Florida Railroad made its first pass through the center of Munns property, this prompted the construction of a town square that was laid out by Munns son and was the first sight to be seen when tourists would step off the train. Munn would not approve of the city being named in his honor so it was in 1885 that the city was incorporated as Lakeland, Florida. The town square, however, was named in his honor and is known, even today, as Munn Park. Munn Park includes walkways, a town well, a bandstand and in 1910 a monument of a Confederate soldier was placed in the center of the walkway as a memorial to the Civil War. Munn was responsible for the construction of the Tremont Hotel, noted to be the best hotel in South Florida by 1885, in 1923 this magnificent hotel was moved and the construction of the Terrace Hotel took its place. During the late 1800s the economy of the area boomed with the citrus, strawberry and tourism industries bringing in the funds to support the rise of the city. In 1891 the Lakeland Light and Power Company switched on the lights in Lakeland, Florida, making this area the third city in the State of Florida to have power!
