Cities in Bradford County FL
Lawtey, Florida established in 1877, is home to one of the only two official speed traps that is designated by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the other one being only a few miles away in Waldo, Florida. The town's early economy was established through the many orange groves in the area, however during the freeze in the late 1800's many of the orange groves were destroyed forcing many settlers to leave the area. Mary Todd, also known as "Aunt Mary", was one of the more prominent settlers in Lawtey. She is said to be responsible for the first library, the "Ladies Village Improvement Society of Lawtey" and the planting of the many Oaks that once lined the streets of the area. The Todd home still remains in Lawtey located at the end of Lake Street. Lawtey is home to many that take pride in the history and ambiance that this bustling old southern community has to offer.
