During the Civil War, the largest battle in Florida was fought right here in Olustee in 1864. This battle was noted as one of the "bloodiest clashes" of the war, Union casualties totaled 1,861 while Confederate casualties totaled 946. This Confederate victory aided in keeping a majority of the sate under the South's control.
