Parrish, Florida, once considered Oak Hill Plantation, was founded by Capt. William B. Hooker in 1850. Hooker was a soldier during the Seminole Wars and raised cotton on the settlement with military friend, William H. Johnson. When Maj. William Iredell Turner, a Sergeant during the Seminole Wars, relocated to the area in 1865 with his family, his son charles Turner purchased the land from Hooker and deeded it over to his father in 1867. It was Maj. Turner that dubbed the area Oak Hill Plantation. In 1868 a cattle rancher, Crawford Parrish relocated to the area with his family, it was his son, John Parrish, that donated land for the train depot. The depot was named in honor of Crawford Parrish and was known as the Parrish Stop, it was this act that prompted the re-naming of Oak Hill Plantation to Parrish, Florida. Parrish, Florida is not only the home nearly 10,000 residents, but also the home to The Florida Gulf Coast Railroad Museum. The museum was constructed to preserve the history of the Florida railroad system. Unlike most museums, The Florida Gulf Coast Railroad Museum prides itself in the uniqueness of actually riding the exhibits.
