Cities in Sarasota County FL
Venice, Florida all began with a homestead that was established near Roberts Bay, by Richard Roberts in the 1870s. Roberts planted crops and started an orange grove, and by 1884 he sold part of his holdings to Frank Higel, who for the next three decades turned Roberts homestead into a prosperous family business. The first post office was originally located in Nokomis and was named Venice by Higel and the first postmaster, Darwin Curry. It wasnt until 1911 that the railroad found its way to Venice, paving the way for development. Bertha Honore Palmer, a widow and business woman from Chicago, Il, found her way to the area and bought out 60,000 acres of land and founded a land development company by the name of Sarasota-Venice Company. She then began platting out the land and thus began the little fishing and farming community of Venice, Florida. It was not until 1925, when orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Fred H. Albee purchased more than 2,900 acres of land from the Venice-Sarasota Company; he developed Nokomis and built a luxury hotel. Albee no sooner began to make plans for the city when the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE) bought his property and the real development of the city of Venice began.
