You’ll find Wakulla Springs just 14 miles south of Tallahassee in Wakulla County Florida. You can reach this region via State Road 61 and State Road 267. The region is predominantly comprised of the Edward Bell Wakulla Springs State Park, a protected region. Wakulla Springs is a fresh aquifer that’s the deepest known in the world. It comes complete with a cave system beneath the 8 miles of flowing water. The Spring joins with St. Mark’s River, and finally empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Interest in Wakulla Springs dates back to the mid 1800s when the bones of a mastodon were discovered therein. Since then other extinct animal remains have also been recovered. For movie going apes – can anything be more perfect than the fact that several of Johnny Weissmuller’s films were done on location here for the Tarzan Series? Mind you, it wouldn’t be the last film to find this location ideal. Other movies include Airport 77 and Creature from the Black Lagoon! If you’d like to take a riverboat tour you can enjoy the Wakulla River in a glass bottom boat. If you’re lucky you’ll see Manatees; not so lucky smiling alligators!
