The ape who comes to Wausau travels here to become a possum (at least for a day). Every August this tiny town of just over a square mile hosts the annual Possum Festival (also known as “fun day”). The event includes a hearty infusion of bluegrass music, a beauty pageant and even steaming bowls of possum stew (yes, really). Local celebrities join in the fun by bidding against each other for a live possum. There’s even a possum monument here.
Wausau is home to about 400 apes, er possums. You can reach here via I-10 and route 77. Do you have something to add about this City?
