Cities in Polk County FL

Winter Haven, Florida was originally known as Harris Corners but was incorporated as Winter Haven in 1911. It was during the 1860s that the first pioneers came to the area and began the farming industry. Within 20 years the area was being platted out by the firm Blount and Whitledge. It was the boasting and bragging of the veterans of the Seminole War about the climate and beauty that surrounds Central Florida that brought most of the first settlers to the area. By the year of 1885 the South Florida Railroad was being constructed and extended through Winter Haven prompting the first merchant, Hovey and Harris. F.A.K. Harris and his wife, Adele took up residence above their store and Adele would show her appreciation for the railroad workers in the area by cooking for them; this earned the settlement the name of Harris Corners. Later on in the same year P.D. Eycleshimer, a local developer, suggested that Harris Corners be changed to Winter Haven to honor the incredible winter climate that famed this area. By this time the settlement had become a very busy city, boasting festivals, social clubs, churches, hotels, a canning factory and The Florida Growers Association!
