Alachua FL Homes for Sale Alachua County Florida Real Estate Cities in Alachua County Florida
Alachua County, Florida was created in 1824, giving the County Seat to Newnansville, a settlement that was located near the current day, Alachua City. Newnansville served as a crossroads for many of the main trails that lead both in and out of the area. As Alachua County began to grow, so did Newnansville! Newnansville grew into a commercial hub and became the most heavily populated area in the county. However, in 1854 the newly constructed railroad bypassed the community of Newnansville to the far east of the area, which in turn prompted the move of the county seat closer to the railroad, thus began the city of Gainesville Florida. The settlement of Newnansville faded away into history books as Gainesville took the lead as the counties busiest hub! The meaning of the word Alachua is said to be a Native American Indian word that means "e;sink"e; or "e;sinkhole"e;, given in honor of the many streams and sinkholes that speckle the county! In 1864, during the Civil War, Gainesville provided a commissary for the confederate army and thus two separate battles took place on Gainesville soil. Due to the central location of Gainesville, Florida two more railroad connections were added, bringing trains down Main Street! With the coming of the railroads new cities began popping up all over the county.
