Baker FL Homes for Sale Baker County Florida Real Estate Cities in Baker County Florida
Baker County, Florida once resided in a small area of St. Johns County until December of 1832 when Columbia County was formed. Baker County remained a part of Columbia County until December of 1858 when Columbia County was divided into three counties; Suwannee County, Columbia County and New River County. It was not until 1861 that the settlement of Baker County became known as its own entity; the 39th county to be formed in the State of Florida. Baker County was named in honor of the Honorable James McNair Baker, judge of the Fourth Judicial District of the State of Florida and States Congress Senator. Baker was born in Robeson County, North Carolina and relocated to the area in the mid 1800's after a battle with typhoid fever drew him to a warmer climate. The county seat at the time was Sanderson and remained the county seat until 1886 at which time the seat was moved to the settlement of Macclenny. During the Civil War, in 1864, a major battle was fought in what was known then as Ocean Pond, today it is known as Olustee. Both the Confederate Soldiers and the Union Soldiers fought with nearly 5,000 men on each side, the Union forces withdrew after a loss of nearly 2,000 men! The site of this bloody battle is now a Historic State Park that hosts reenactments of this battle yearly in February. Agriculture and cattle ranching played an important part of the history of Baker County, as well as the Osceola National Forest. Today Baker County is the home to cities such as Baxter, Cuyler, Glen Saint Mary, Macclenny, Macedonia, Margeretta, Sanderson and Taylor. A large part of Osceola National Forest occupies Baker County, bringing many opportunities for camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, hunting and viewing some of Florida's original habitat! Approximately 200,000 acres of pristine Flatwoods forest entwined with bay swamps and cypress trees make up Osceola National Forest. From the eastern edge of the Okefenokee Swamp emerges the St. Mary's River forming a boundary between the states of Georgia and Florida. St. Mary's River flows into the Atlantic Ocean and provides ample opportunities for fishing, paddling and swimming! The Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Olustee is held at the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park during the month of February. With major displays from the National Civil War naval Museum and Civil war speakers and authors putting on presentations, the Olustee Battlefield Annual Reenactment proves to be a day of education and excitement! Located only minutes away from the University of North Florida, the University of Florida and Jacksonville University, Baker County sits within the boundaries of some of the best education in the State of Florida.
