Brevard County, Florida has been known by many names over the years. While Florida was still a territory the county was known as Mosquito County, unofficially it was also known as Leigh Read in the early 1800's. In 1855 it was renamed Brevard County in honor of Theodore Washington Brevard, a State Comptroller from 1854 until 1860. During this time, Brevard County extended south along the State of Florida's East Coast all the way down to Miami-Dade! After many different amendments, Brevard County did not take on its current boundaries until 1905. As with most of the state of Florida, Brevard County was originally inhabited by Native American Indians as far back as 12,000 years ago. In 1783, off of Cape Canaveral, the last naval battle of the American Revolutionary War was said to have taken place, between the USS Alliance and the HMS Sybill. The boundaries of Brevard County remained mostly unsettled until the Second Seminole War, in which the U.S. Army set up supply posts and routes for the soldiers, in the early 1800's. In the 1850's more settlers began arriving and building a small community in the area of Sand Point and by the end of the Civil War the Indian River area began to populate itself with both southern and northern soldiers and their families on the hunt for new opportunities. The area's economy was fueled by commercial fishing, citrus groves, tourism and other smaller industries until the end of the Civil War. Then came the America's space flight program in the 1960's which prompted a huge population growth that continues to be the influence in Brevard County.
Today Brevard County is the home to cities such as Barefoot Bay, Cape Canaveral (Port Canaveral), Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Grant, Indialantic, Indian Harbor Beach, Malabar, Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, Melbourne Village, Merritt Island, Palm Bay, Palm Shores, Rockledge, Satellite Beach, Suntree, Titusville, Viera, and West Melbourne. One of the main highlights to living in Brevard County is NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center located in Cape Canaveral! Watching the space shuttles launch into space is quite a sight to behold. As our brave American astronauts launch into the world of the unknown and leave behind the world in which we live. The Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne provides educational classes for both children and adults alike, exhibitions that include photography by Annie Leibovitz and special monthly events. The Cocoa Beach peir in Cocoa Beach was established in 1962, it serves as a place for not only sun bathing, boating, swimming and fishing but provides many different restaurants, bars and live music.
