Cities in Clay County Florida

Clay County was considered a part of Duval County until it found it's independence in 1858 with Green Cove Springs acting as the county seat. Many wars have molded Clay County into the bustling county that stands today. During the 1st Seminole War in 1835, Middleberg, known then as Garey's Ferry, became the home to the supply depot for the U.S Army on the east coast of Florida. The 2nd Seminole War prompted the construction of Ft. Heileman at the forks of Black Creek and served as another supply depot. Most of the towns in Clay County were abandoned during the war, but Garey's Ferry stood strong and true. It was during the Civil War that Clay County witnessed its first battle. The battle took place at a fort in Magnolia Springs that sits alongside St. John's River; the fort was established by the Union forces as a means to put pressure on the Confederate Troops. In 1864, the Union forces were returning to the fort after a successful rain on Middleburg when they were ambushed by the confederate troops that were being led by Capt. J.J. Dickinson. After the long 45 minute battle, the union troops lost many soldiers, while the confederate soldiers lost none. While the wars helped mold and shape Clay County, it was the tourism and promises of healing with the many springs that brought Clay County to life. Many of the rich and famous came to see the springs of Clay County, until Henry Flagler extended his railroad to Miami.
