Cities in De Soto County FL
Centrally located in the south of Florida, DeSoto county was named after the Spanish explorer Henry DeSoto. You can get there through Fort Myers Airport which is an hour drive to the south.
Desoto County grew out of Manatee County in the late 1800s. At that point DeSoto was one of the biggest counties in Florida, but was eventually sub-divided. One spot of particular interest is Pine Level courthouse where escaped prisoners used to make quite a ruckus. While only a few bricks of the original structure remain, ghost hunters feel it’s a haunted area.
The real growth for Desoto began with the railroad, and the discovery of phosphate on Peace River, bringing mining to the area.
