Flagler County, named in honor of Henry Morrison Flagler, railroad developer and American Tycoon from Hopewell, New York, became an individual county in1917. Henry Flagler was a main character in the development of most of the east coast of Florida and founder of the Florida East Coast Railway. When Henry Flagler relocated to Florida in 1876, he couldn't help but notice the incredible need for an adequate form of transportation and Florida's potential to become a tourist state. He started his venture with the construction of the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine in 1885 and the purchase of short line railroads, which later became the Florida East Coast Railway. The main source of income in the area at the time depended on cattle, timber, and turpentine and citrus, these resources became easily transported once the railway was put into place, increasing the economy in Flagler County. Flagler County, Florida is now the home to many separate communities, such as, Beverly Beach, Bunnell, Flagler Beach, Marineland and Palm Coast. Bordered along the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River, Flagler County has become home to many visitors and residents, alike, in search of a life full of sand and surf! A visit to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park offers 410 acres of coastal environment to provide opportunities for fishing, picnicking and breathtaking peaceful scenery. In 1927 the Flagler Pier was constructed by Weir and Benson, a company out of Jacksonville, Florida, today, the pier has become a landmark for Flagler County. The pier provides a bait shop and ample opportunities for anglers to reel in 'the big one'. Across from the City Hall lies the Flagler Beach Historical Museum, a 'must-see' for anyone that is remotely interested in the local heritage and good ol' Florida living. The Local Farmer's Market opens up every Friday and Saturday morning. Vendors from all over the county come for miles to provide the local residents with fresh produce and handmade crafts.
