Gulf County, named in honor of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico on which it lies, was founded in 1925. Wewahitchka was the county's first county seat until 1965 when it was moved to Port St. Joe, originally known as Saint Joseph. Gulf County was carved out of Calhoun County due to the persistence of Terrill Higdon Stone, Mayor and member of the Board of County Commissioners. In 1936, Alfred Dupont arrived in the area with dreams of development and improving the economy within the community. Dupont purchased thousands of acres within Gulf County and soon after began his future in the paper industry, although he passed away in 1935, his wife and brother-in-law, Edward Ball, continued with Dupont's plans and by 1936 the St. Joe Paper Company took form.

Today Gulf County is the home to cities such Port St. Joe and Wewahitchka. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf County provides miles of white sandy beaches for residents and visitors alike to take advantage of the many opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming and relaxing! St. Joseph Peninsula State Park was nominated the #1 Beach in America in 2002, offering water recreation such as sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming. The park provides a boat ramp and a full-facility campground which features 8 bayside cabins plus primitive campsites in the wilderness preserve! Visiting the Port St. Joe SaltAir Farmer's Market on the 1st and the 3rd Saturday of the month from April through November is a definite 'must do'! The Market offers fresh seasonal produce from local farmers throughout Gulf County, while serving as a community gathering place and cultural center during the 'off season'!

Gulf County, known as "Florida's Forgotten Coast" is a reminder of what coastal Florida was once like. Offering beach front homes, charming shops and all that old Florida once had to offer, Gulf County is quite a wonder. Gazing at the incredible sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico is something that relocating to the area can provide everyday.
