Indian River FL Homes for Sale Indian River County Florida Real Estate Cities in Indian River County Florida
In 1925 Representative Anthony W. Young presented a bill to the Florida Senate that would release Vero Beach from the politics of Ft. Pierce by creating a new county; Indian River County, named in honor of the Indian River Lagoon, which runs freely through the eastern half of the county. The bill passed, and on this day in May Indian River County was formed. Once Henry Flagler built the Florida's East Coast Railroad, farmers and fisherman were granted the fastest way available to move product throughout the nation, providing growth for the local economy. Another factor that boosted the economy in the area was the Drainage Districts, created in 1905. These districts were responsible for draining millions of acres of wetlands, turning the dense swamps into productive real estate. This system was highly effective for nearly 10 years, when heavy rains fell in 1915 flooding the drainage ditches to the extent of nearly putting towns out of business. After WWI, during the 1920's, Vero Beach began to boom! The railroad was expanding and people from all over the country were flocking to Florida by the carloads. The land prices in Florida were not based on the value of land, as a matter of fact; they weren't really based on anything. Acquiring land was simple as wanting to own land, credit was simple to obtain and cash was readily available. Eventually prices skyrocketed and people stopped buying, thus began the Florida Land Bust. Today, Indian River County is the home to cities such as Fellsmere, Indian River Shores, Orchid, Roseland, Sebastian and Vero Beach. The rivers, beaches and many lakes in Indian River County provide ample opportunities for swimming, scuba diving, boating, fishing, paddling and nature watching. In addition to the many water recreation opportunities in the area, Indian River County provides five public golf courses, tennis facilities, community parks, museums, theaters and pristine shopping areas. Located along Florida's Treasure Coast, Indian River County offers a quality of life that is unique to Florida. Waterfront property, single family homes and gated communities offer a diversity of real estate opportunities. Centrally located between Miami and the Kennedy Space Center, provides miles of pristine beaches combined with a rural lifestyle that is ideal for living a life full of opportunities. |
