Madison County, named in of the 4th President of the United States, James Madison, was established in 1827 from a portion of Escambia County and was once considered to be Florida's largest county. Contrary to popular belief, the county seat, the City of Madison, was not named after James Madison but Madison C. Livingston, the individual who donated the first parcel of land to create the beautiful city in 1838. It was Madison County's very own Captain Colin P. Kelly, that not only received the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroics during WWII, but ultimately had a U.S. liberty ship, named in his honor; the SS Colin P. Kelly, Jr. In fact, President Roosevelt hired sculptor Walter A. Russell to a create a monument in Capt. Kelly’s honor, the Four Freedoms Monument stands for the freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom of fear. The monument was originally dedicated at Madison Square Garden in N.Y. in 1943, however, a year later the monument was re-dedicated in Madison, Florida. Today Madison County provides 716 square miles of rivers, woodlands and rolling hills with cities such as Greenville, Lee and Madison calling this county 'home'. 600 acre Cherry Lake is a prime spot for water recreation abound. Water-skiing, boating, swimming, sailing and fishing are popular water recreation activities in the area. Cherry Lake not only offers prime largemouth bass fishing, but provides boat ramps, picnic tables and restrooms. Bordered by the Aucilla River, the Withlacoochee River and the infamous Suwannee River brings wildlife watching right to your backyard.
