    Cities in Martin County Florida

Martin County, named in honor of John W. Martin, Governor of Florida from 1925 until 1929, was established in 1925 from portions of Palm Beach County and St.Lucie County. Stuart, the county seat of Martin County, was once a part of the northern portion of Palm Beach County. During the land boom, the residents of Stuart fought to create their own county, due to the heavy taxes that were placed on them with very few benefits; however, the city was represented by a single commissioner who was easily outvoted. After many failed attempts, the Stuart Commercial Club started a campaign to make improvements to the St. Lucie Inlet by developing a harbor in the St. Lucie River, these improvements would require a local rule, and thus a new county division committee was created. It wasn't until the committee came up with naming the new county in honor of the presiding Governor of Florida, that the county became official and county seat became Stuart.

Today Martin County is home to cities such as Arundel, Indiantown, Hobe Sound, Jensen Beach, Jupiter Island, Ocean Breeze Park, Palm City, Sewall's Point and Stuart. Located on the pristine Atlantic Ocean and known as the Treasure Coast, Martin County provides opportunities for much water recreation entertainment. Boating, fishing, sailing and midnight sea turtle egg-laying expeditions are just the beginning of things to do in the Martin County area. Stuart has been dubbed the "Sailfish Capital of the World" which is just a sample of the great fishing along the miles of serene, white sandy beaches. In addition to the many boutiques, cafes, galleries, and the old Florida charm, Martin County is full of some the friendliest people around.
