Cities in Miami-Dade County Florida

In 1836, when Dade County was created under the Territorial Act of the United States, it originally contained Palm Beach, Broward County, the Florida Keys and Bahia Honda Key north. The county was named in honor Major Francis L. Dade, a soldier that was killed during the Second Seminole War a year earlier. The county seat was located in Indian Key located in the Florida Keys, until 1844 when it was moved to Miami. In 1866 all of the Florida Keys became Monroe County and 22 years later the county seat was moved to Juno, presently known as Juno Beach. It was not until 1899 that Miami received the locale of the county seat once again. Palm Beach County was formed a decade later, which included only the northern part of Dade County. It was in 1915 that Palm Beach County and Dade County donated equal parts of the county boarders to create what is now known as Broward County. In only 110 years, from 1896 until 2006 the population of Miami grew from around 1,000 residents to almost 5,000,000 residents, which prompted the change of the county name in 1997 to Miami-Dade County.
