Cities in Osceola County FL
Named in honor of the Native American Indian leader Osceola, whose name translates into "Rising Sun", Osceola County is one of the smaller counties in the state, covering only 1,506 square miles. It was once a part of Orange County and Brevard County however the county became its own entity in 1887, during which time Osceola County stretched as far south as Lake Okeechobee and remained that way until 1917. Once the county was formed, the city of Kissimee, Florida was elected as the county seat. Due to its central Florida location, the county has been considered a transportation crossroad throughout most of history. The Osceola County Courthouse is officially the oldest Courthouse in the State of Florida, and it still serves as a Courthouse today! The land was purchased from D.B. Stewart immediately following the naming of Kissimee Florida as the County seat. Construction of the Courthouse commenced in 1889 and six months into the project part of one of the towers collapsed causing a minor setback, in not only the construction of the building, but in the finances as well. However, being only a minor setback, the Courthouse was completed only 5 months later. The Historic Register added the Osceola Courthouse to its list in 1977 and the building is being restored to its original design. Since 1992, Osceola County is known as a Charter County, which is to say it is an administrative subdivision of the State of Florida. The Government is run by three separate sets of elected officials; the County Commission, Constitutional Officers and the Judicial Officers. Today Osceola County has grown to be the home of cities such as Campbell, Celebration, Champions Gate, Kissimmee, Poinciana and St. Cloud. Centrally located and serving as the gateway into Walt Disney World, Osceola County provides ample opportunities for many different recreational activities. Kissimmee, Florida serves as the home to the Houston Astros spring training facility at the Osceola County Stadium, as well as the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. Managed by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes provides over 100,000 acres of extreme fishing and water recreation opportunities! Bull Creek provides 23,000 acres of natural Florida just outside the town of community of Holopaw, prime for hunting, fishing, camping, paddling, and horseback riding. Prairie Lakes Loop/Three Lakes Trail located just outside the city of St. Cloud, offers 31 miles of breathtaking wilderness, highly populated with an abundance of wildlife making this Wildlife Management Preserve one of the longest forested hikes in the State of Florida. Homes vary from community to community, offering single-family homes, apartments, town houses, ranch homes and land lots, providing a little something for everyone's tastes!
