Incorporated in 1909 and named in honor of the abundance of palm trees and beaches in the area, Palm Beach County was created from portions of Dade County and Brevard County. A majority of the county's development was due to the hard work and commitment of Henry Flagler, railroad pioneer. Flagler relocated to Palm Beach County from Jacksonville in 1894, and began construction of the first of many hotels in the area, the Royal Poinciana Hotel on the shores of Lake Worth in Palm Beach. By the 1900's Flagler began developing the extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to extend from Jacksonville through Palm Beach County and on to Key West in Monroe County. The beginning of the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway occurred in 1858 in Jacksonville and in 1905 Flagler announced that the final 128 miles of the extension of the railway will commence, bringing the end to Key West. The railway was completed in 1912, 16 months before Flagler passed away from injuries after falling down a flight of stairs in May of 1913.
