Cities in Pinellas County FL
The word Pinellas is from the Spanish words Punta Pinal which means "e;point of pines"e;. Pinellas County was discovered by a man by the name of Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. Narvaez and 400 of his soldiers came to this area in search of riches. What he found instead was the Tocobagan Indians that had been occupying the area of Punta Pinal for hundreds of years. After ransacking their huts and destroying their villages, Narvaez enslaved them and questioned them about the gold. The Tocobagan Indians sent the Spaniards north to the territories of Georgia and Alabama. This left Punta Pinal quiet for the next few hundred years. By the early 1800's the Tocobagan Indians had died off and were now replaced by the Seminoles. In the early 1830's, Count Odet Philippe of France came to what is now known as Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, here he established his plantation and introduced the area to the first citrus grove. Philippe persuaded more settlers to come to the area and it was in this next decade that the area began to boom. Up until January 1, 1912, Pinellas County was part of Hillsborough County and was known as West Hillsborough. Trips to and from Tampa proved to be arduous and difficult. Traveling through the marshlands and trails that were often impassable, to make business meetings was sometimes near impossible. After many years, a bill was finally passed to make West Hillsborough its own county. Clearwater, which was known until 1895 as Clear Water Harbor, was made the County seat.
